Help for the split time list

This text describes the contents of WinSplits Online's split time lists, as well as the concepts, colours and settings involved.

The contents of the split time list

The appearance and contents of the split time lists is depend on the settings that are altered at the bottom of the web browser window. Using the default settings, a part of a split time list could appear like this:

For each runner, position, name, club, finish time, time behind the winner and times and positions at each control are shown. There are two time rows. The upper row contains the split times, i.e. times between two subsequent controls, and the lower row contains the total times, i e accumulated times from the start to a certain control. In the example above, Gösta Björnlund of Katrineholms OK was noted for the time 4.32 between control 2 and 3, and the total time at control 3 is 12.25. The positions are displayed within parantheses next to each pair of times. Gösta has thus the fifth fastest split time, and the third fastest total time. A missing punch is noted by a hyphen. Information about time differences etc at a control is displayed when resting the mouse pointer over a split or total time for a while. The appearance of the split time list could be altered by updating the settings at the bottom of the page. Read more about this topic in the Settings paragraph below.

Colours

Colours are used to make certain information in the table appear more distinctly.

red text colourRed text colour indicates best split time and total time, respectively.
blue text colourBlue text colour indicates that the split time or total time is among the three best.
pink background colourPink background colour means that there has been a mistake made at that control. Read more about mistakes and time loss further down.
light yellow background colourThe light yellow hue of the background of the upper time row for each runner indicates that the times are split times.
darker yellow back colourThe somewhat darker yellow hue of the background of the lower of the time rows for each runner indicates that the times are total times (or real times if that setting is active).

Sorting the list

By deafult, the list is sorted according to the finish times of the runners. Sorting may be made by a certain split time or total time as well. Click the leg or tot link in the column header of the desired control. You could also sort the list by another column by clicking its column header. The column that the list is currently sorted by is displayed on yellow background.

Settings

There are a number of settings at the bottom of the page. Let the mouse pointer rest at a setting to show a text about what that particular setting is about. When you have changed the settings, click the OK button to the right to update the split time list according to the changes made.

Controls with time loss

Some split times in the list have pink background colour. This means that the runner's time loss on such a leg is relatively large. In other words: a mistake has probably been made. The amount of time lost on a control is displayed when resting the mouse pointer over the split time for a while. This assumes that the show extended information setting is active. Time loss calculation is most reliable for large classes, where the runners are relatively on the same level. The mistake conditions might have to be adjusted in order to achieve best results. Read more about mistake conditions and how time loss is calculated in the concepts list below.

Concepts list

split timeThe time between two subsequent controls. Shown on the upper of the two time rows for each runner.
total timeThe time from the start to a certain control. Shown on the lower of the two time rows for each runner.
real timeThe time of the day when the runner punched the control. Shown on the lower of the two time rows for each runner if the real times setting is active. Interesting e.g. at chasing starts.
relative timeThe time difference to the best split time or total time. A relative time is indicated by a plus sign followed by the time difference. For example, +0.19 means that the runner is 19 seconds behind the best time. The best split times and total times are displayed normally.
time without mistakesThe split time data gives opportunities to make time loss calculations. By default, legs where a runner loses more than 30 seconds or 25 percent more than usually are counted as mistakes. A time without mistakes is with other words the time that the runner would have had if he/she had not made any mistakes on the leg.

Time loss is calculated according to the following method. The runner's difference to the best time on each leg is calculated. The median value of these differences is the "normalized" performance of the runner. The mistake conditions then decide how much worse than the median value a split time difference should be to be counted as a mistake. A length correction is also done. As mistakes most often occur at the controls, they are not as clear on long legs as on short ones. The mistake conditions hold exactly at normal leg lengths.

If the mistake conditions are fulfilled, the time without mistakes is calculated by adding the median difference for the legs where no mistakes have been made multiplied by the best split time to the best split time, i e the following formula is used:

t = (100 + md) / 100 * b

where t is the time without mistakes, md is the median difference to the best split time in percent for the legs with no time loss, and b is the best split time.
